Web design in Cowley

The industrial side of Oxford, home to the MINI plant, Oxford Business Park and a high street with more variety than almost anywhere in the county.

Cowley has been making cars for more than a century. William Morris began production here in 1913, and the works grew into one of the country's great car plants. Today BMW's MINI Plant Oxford is one of the largest employers in the county and is set to build electric MINI models. Around it sits a ring of businesses that supply, service and support it: logistics firms, engineering workshops, tooling and fixings suppliers, recruitment agencies, training providers and contract cleaners.

Next door, Oxford Business Park, built on the site of the old Morris works, adds offices for technology, professional services and research companies. And a mile or so north, the Cowley Road runs from The Plain out through East Oxford, lined with restaurants, grocers, music venues, barbers, bike shops and community organisations. The Cowley Road Carnival fills it every July.

That is three very different economies within walking distance, and they need three different kinds of website.

Industrial and supply-chain businesses

Engineering firms around Cowley often have the oldest websites we see. They were built when work came through existing relationships and trade shows, and they have been left alone because the phone kept ringing. But buyers now research suppliers online before they make contact, and in a tight labour market, recruits judge a company by its site.

A useful B2B site for a Cowley manufacturer usually includes:

  • Capability pages written in specific terms: processes, materials, tolerances, part sizes and batch volumes.
  • Quality information: certifications you genuinely hold and how inspection works.
  • Sector pages describing the kind of work you do for automotive, aerospace, medical or energy customers, without naming clients who have not agreed.
  • A quote form that accepts drawings and asks for quantity and lead time.
  • A careers section with real workshop photographs and details of apprenticeships, if you offer them.

Because many of these firms already have a site with some search history, we usually approach it as a website redesign: keep the pages that bring in enquiries, redirect the rest properly, and rebuild around better content. We wrote at more length about this in better websites for Oxfordshire engineering firms.

Industrial buyers rarely search for "engineering company Oxford". They search for a process and a material: "CNC machining aluminium Oxfordshire", "powder coating Oxford", "sheet metal prototypes". That is why capability pages matter. Each one answers a specific search with specific detail. Location is part of it, because many buyers want a supplier within a short drive for collections and site visits, but the process comes first.

Oxford Business Park offices

Firms on the business park, from software companies to professional services, tend to need modern, credible sites that explain a service clearly and support recruitment. Most are content-heavy: services, case studies, news, careers. We usually build these on WordPress with custom blocks, so marketing teams can publish without breaking the layout.

The Cowley Road

The Cowley Road is Oxford's most varied street. Restaurants from many cuisines, Polish and Middle Eastern grocers, independent cafés, record and vintage shops, venues and community centres sit side by side. Customers here are students, young professionals, long-standing local families and visitors coming for the food and music.

For these businesses, the site mostly needs to answer three questions fast: what you offer, when you are open and how to book or find you. We build small, very fast sites that work on any phone, with menus, events and opening hours the owner can update in a minute. Where your customers prefer another language, a translated page with the essentials can help.

Community organisations

East Oxford has many charities, faith groups and community projects working on small budgets. We keep these projects lean, accessible and easy for volunteers to manage, and we will tell you if a free or low-cost tool would do the job.

Recruitment pages that work

Across all three of Cowley's economies, hiring is a recurring problem. Engineering firms compete with the car plant for skilled staff; restaurants and shops need reliable part-time workers; business park firms compete with London salaries. A careers page that shows the real place of work, explains shifts, pay structure and training honestly, and makes applying simple is often worth as much as any sales page.

Getting started

If you are in Cowley, we are happy to visit the workshop, office or restaurant before we propose anything. Seeing how you work, and what your customers ask at the counter or on the phone, makes for a better website than any questionnaire.
